Back by popular demand, Rolling Thunder is BMR's most popular event of the year. This year's event will be held over three days; Friday, June 22nd, Saturday, June 23rd and Sunday, June 24th. The launch event is open to the all NAR/TRA and non-members as well as the general public. Model rocketry enthusiasts from all over the Pacific Northwest are anticipated to attend this three-day event.

For rocketry enthusiasts who wish to spend the night in Dayton while attending our launches, the Best Western Plus hotel sits on a hill at the east end of Main Street overlooking the town. The Blue Mountain Rocketeer's launch site is located 4.5 miles north of Dayton, Washington, 8/10 of a mile off State Route 12 on Whetstone Road. The site is situated at the west end of a 66-acre alfalfa field in the middle of a low, wide valley. An old livestock corral planted in grass located at the southwest corner of the launch site provides a suitable parking and camping area. The Blue Mountain Rocketeers own a porta-potty located on site for the convenience of its members and guests. We ask that you please don't drive on the alfalfa. In consideration of Broughton Land Company (the land owner) no open campfires are permitted. However, barbeques, camp stoves, portable “patio pits” and lanterns are acceptable, so long as they do not leave burn marks on the ground.
The FAA waiver for Rolling Thunder is 5,000 feet AGL (above ground level). The waiver opens at 9:00 a.m and closes at 6:00 p.m. On Friday and Saturday, the launch will continue under FAR 101 "Class 1" regulations from 6:00 p.m. to sundown. A list of the motors that can be flown under FAR 101 Class 1 can be referenced HERE.
All aspects of the National Association of Rocketry's model and high power safety codes will be observed. A copy of these safety codes can be obtained from the NAR's website. Persons can refer to the club's documents page for additional launch site specific range rules. The Blue Mountain Rocketeers maintain a launch control system supporting 32 launch pads (16 model, 8 mid-power and 8 high power.) The club provides these launch pads, equipped with stainless steel launch rods up to 1/2-inch in diameter, as well as four, six and eight-foot launch rails. Due to land ownership issues at the east (down wind) end of the launch area, as well as compliance with the NAR High Power Safety Code, we must limit the size and impulse of the rockets launched in an attempt to maintain recovery on the field. As a general rule, flights of "A" through "I" impulse are supported.
